Description:

JOHN D. IMBODEN AND MARCUS J. WRIGHT
A letter penned by MARCUS J. WRIGHT (1831 - 1922) Confederate brigadier general wounded at Shiloh, returning to fight at Chickamauga and Atlanta. He later compiled the Official Records of the Civil War, the verso bearing the response of JOHN D. IMBODEN (1823 - 1895), Confederate brigadier general who served under Stonewall Jackson at Cross Keys and Port Republic, later severely wounded at Seven Days. Wright's letter on his own ‘War Department' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 14, 1887, reads in part: ‘...In series I Vol. XIX, part 2 of Official Records War of the Rebellion, is a letter from Gen. R. E. Lee to you dated Oct. 6, 1862 in which he compliments you in your report of your attack on the enemy...at Hanging Rock and subsequent support of two companies...we have no copy of your report, can you furnish it...'. On the verso is the response from Imboden, in part: ‘...I regret to inform you that I have not...'war papers'...all I had were captured or burned in the Spring of 1865...If I kept a copy the book containing it, it fell into the hands of [?] at Appomattox...at a reunion...I was presented with the original of a paper I prize highly, the protest of officers in my command against the appointment to my command whilst I was away sick...If that would be of service to you I will lend it to be copied...'. Tipped to cardstock, one fold, else fine.
