Description:

JOHN COFFEE "JACK" HAYS
(1817-1883) Captain in the Texas Rangers and a military officer of the Republic of Texas, fighting first against the Comanche and later the Mexican army. Rare partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Washington, Texas, Dec. 19, 1843, a Treasury Warrant issued by the Treasurer of the Republic of Texas, in the amount of $1000 for: "...Relief of Capt. John C. Hays and Company this amount being Drawn on an estimate the Auditor will charge accordingly". Hays endorses the verso of the warrant in black ink. Shows slight soiling to the verso, very good to fine. John Coffee ("Captain Jack" or "Devil Jack") Hays fit, and indeed helped form, the stereotype of the Texas Ranger. Born in Tennessee in 1817, Hays moved to Texas in 1836, joined the Texan army and was appointed to a company of Rangers. He and his cohorts helped establish the Ranger tradition as fearless mounted irregular troops. He proved an able leader, and by understanding the tactics of his enemies, a fearless Indian fighter. It was in the Mexican War that the Rangers gained national attention, serving under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott. In 1849, Hays decided to cash in on the gold rush in California, and in 1850 he was elected sheriff of San Francisco. This was followed by an appointment as Surveyor General of California in 1853. Gold, ranching and real estate made Hays a wealthy man. He made frequent trips back to Texas, but remained a resident of California until his death in 1883.
