JOHN CHARLES CAMPBELL
(1894 - 1942) British major general who commanded the Eighth Army during the Western Desert campaign, recipient of the Victoria Cross for his actions as a commander at Sidi Rezegh in November 1941. Killed in an auto accident. Very rare war-date initialed document 'JCC', 1p. 8vo., [n.p.],, February 1, 1942, a document recommending an award for Patrick Vine of the 22nd Army brigade. In part: '...This warrant officer was a magnificent example to all who came in contact with him for his cool and cheerful courage and his desire to get into battle...he remained in position to the very last moment and engaged the enemy at very short range...When sufficiently rearmed he took up his position again and It was largely due to his strong resistance and perfect control that the enemy were at last brought to a halt...[sd] N.M Ritchie Lieut-General...' Campbell initials a nearby margin as lieutenant general. A few scattered stains and chips to the margin.
