Description:

(1887 - 1958) American lieutenant general who in 1942 and began assembling the massive logistical network used by U.S. forces in the invasion of France. He continued in charge of supplying American forces until the end of the war. Incredibly, by June 6, 1944, one out of every four U.S. soldiers in Europe was under Lee's command. Good lot of four pieces, includes two A.L.S.'s and two T.L.S.'s, three signed as 'Cliff', one in full, various locations, 1946-49, all sent to his friend and predecessor in the same post, CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In part: '...I would congratulate the outfit you are to head...[your] training of the 1st Infantry Division in England and...leadership in France from...D-Day...left nothing to be desired...Have read on this train the Sat. Eve. Post article [about you]...Like the beautiful woman's photograph, it fails to do true justice...Also it's very kind to the memory of T[heodore] R[oosevelt] Jr. and [?] Terry as well...Know you will be as tough with your [?] as you were with me - getting all that was coming to your outfit!...' File holes cost a few letters of text, else fine. With carbon copies of Huebner's associated letters as well. File holes at top, else fine.
