Description:

JOHN C. FREMONT
(1813 - 1890) "The Pathfinder", explorer of the western frontier and Union army major general until sacked by Lincoln for his efforts to garner more power. Scarce early war-date manuscript L.S. "J.C. Fremont / Maj. Genl Commg" 1p. 4to on imprinted letterhead "Head Quarters, Western Department", Jefferson City, [Mo.], Oct. 1, 1861, to First Lieutenant Chas. W. Purcell. Fremont orders: "...You are hereby appointed First Lieutenant of Artillery and directed to report to Col. Waagner, Chief of Ordnance for duty...". On verso appears is an A.N.S. of "J.P. Andrews / DAQMr Gl", Dec. 19, 1861, reading: "This gentleman's name does not appear on the Lists sent to Washington by Genl. Fremont, and consequently on the Lists sent to me by General Halleck Commg. Genl.". Colonel Gustav Wagner's tenure as the Western Department's chief of artillery lasted but a few weeks due to Fremont's dismissal. An engineer, Wagner also served under Gen. George B. McClellan and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant; both spoke very highly of him. Very good.
