Description:

JOHN C. FREMONT
(1813 - 1890) "The Pathfinder", explorer of the western frontier and Union army major general until sacked by Lincoln for his efforts to garner more power. Early war-date manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to., Jefferson City, Oct. 1, 1861, on letterhead of the "Head Quarters, Western Department", an appointment of Charles W. Purcell: "…You are hereby appointed First Lieutenant of Artillery and directed to report to Col. Waagner , Chief of Ordnance…". Fremont signs as Major General. An A.N.S. by J. P. Andrews on verso reads: "This gentleman's name does not appear on the Lists sent to Washington by Genl. Fremont, and consequently on the Lists sent to me by General Halleck Commg. Genl". Col. Gustav Waagner's tenure as the Western Department's chief of artillery lasted but a few weeks due to Fremont's dismissal. Waagner would go on to serve under McClellan and Grant. Very good.
