Description:

JOHN C. C. SANDERS
(1840 – 1864) One of the Confederate States' youngest brigadier generals. Sanders led the 11th Alabama at Seven Pines and during the following Seven Days Battles. After fighting in the Battle of Gaines Mill, Sanders was severely wounded in the leg by a shell fragment at the Battle of Glendale (Frayser's Farm). He was wounded again at the Battle of Second Bull Run and yet again at Antietam. He fought at Fredericksburg, Salem Church, and Gettysburg, where he was wounded in the knee on July 2, 1863. For his actions at Spotsylvania Court House, Sanders was promoted to brigadier general on May 31, 1864. He later fought at the Crater, Petersburg, and at Globe Tavern where the brave young man was mortally wounded. Excessively rare war-date A.L.S., 6pp. 8vo., 'In Camp', Jan. 31 1864, to his father. In small part: '...our rations are short...we are now getting one quarter pound of bacon or salt beef or one half pound of fresh beef...[we] are in excellent spirits and are determined to remain at the post of duty until the enemy is driven from our [?] and made to acknowledge our independence...I am proud to say that this was the first regiment of this brigade to take this step...The [?] of this brigade has re-enlisted...All the Ala. regiments in this army retain[?] a high reputation for gallantry...If our men will only stand firm during the next campaign, the war will be won...' He mentions resistance to the draft in the North, his attendance of meetings in Richmond, the influences of other generals upon his anticipated promotion, news of mutual friends in the regiment, and sending regards to his family. The text is quite light due to the use of 'adversity ink', but with some diligence the entire letter is legible and in otherwise fine condition. Exceptional content from one of the rarest generals of the war.
