Description:

(1821-1875) Vice President of the United States who was second to Lincoln in the 1860 elections, later became a Confederate general in the Civil War and served as the last Confederate Secretary of War. Handwritten endorsement on the verso of a war date A.L.S. sent to him, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 13, 1864, from a farmer asking for the protection of a shipment of corn. In part: '...enclosed you will find permission for the shipment of three parcels of corn...to J.L. Deane, W.L. Smith, and myself....J.L. Deane is a retired officer living in Lynchburg, and wants this corn for his own family use. W.L. Smith (my brother and a private in Genl. Lee's army) wants the quantity of corn...for five old and young negroes that need to be supported. I need mine for the same purpose...' Breckinridge writes in darker black ink 'Granted Dec. 14, 1864' at the conclusion. Light ink show through, minor creasing, else fine. Towards the end of the war there were severe food shortages in the South due to draughts, the destruction of railroads and supply lines, and the overall lack of male labor to harvest. Farms and plantations were forced out of necessity to stop planting cash crops like tobacco and cotton and switch to grains or corn. Despite their effort's food was still hard to come by in the final months.
