Description:

JOHN BURGOYNE
(1722 - 1792) British Major General and playwright who commanded the British expedition from Canada in 1777 in an attempt to divide the colonies in two. Ultimately he was forced to surrender his army at Saratoga. A.D.S. ,1p. oblong 12mo., Bath, Oct. 25, 1790, a draft note sent to Nathan Collyer, a London merchant, with instructions to enact payment. In part: "Three days after date pay to Mr. Henry Phillott on order one Hundred & fifty pounds value received, & place it to account of J. Burgoyne". Paper includes an excellent embossed revenue stamp in the amount of one shilling at left; docketed on verso with a signature by Phillott. Phillott was the last proprietor of Bath's famed Bear Inn, which is most likely where Burgoyne incurred his debt, only two years before his death. Toned with a minor tear at top right corner, affecting neither signature nor embossed revenue stamp, else very good.
