Description:

JOHN BROWN
(1800 - 1859) American abolitionist who became obsessed with idea of abolishing slavery by force, massacred five slavery adherents at Pottawatomie, seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry and was hanged for treason. Very early, potentially historic manuscript D.S. "John Brown", 1p. 4to., Meadville, Penn., July 18, 1828, a deed in which Brown purchases from "Oscar Cullum of Meadville...one half part of town lots No. 172 & 173...the said Brown for his part to pay the said Cullum the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars in five equal payments annually...". A few small foxed spots, else boldly signed and very good. Brown lived in many places during his lifetime, moving a total of ten times. In May of 1825, he moved his family from Ohio to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, twelve miles northeast of Meadville. He lived for ten years in Randolph Township of Crawford County where he built a tannery and a house that contained a secret room that Brown used to hide fugitive slaves who had escaped. The lots sold here to Brown may have very well borne structures used by Brown in transiting escaped slaves. On July 14, 1833, Brown married his second wife, Mary Ann Day, who was seventeen at the time, in Meadville. Mary Ann would give birth to thirteen of Brown's children.
