Description:

JOHN BROWN
(1800 - 1859) American abolitionist who became obsessed with idea of abolishing slavery by force, massacred five slavery adherents at Pottawatomie, seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry and was hanged for treason. Rare, early manuscript L.S. 1p. legal folio,[n.p.], July 18, 1828, a deed for purchase of "...one half part of town lots No. 172 & 173 and to make a good and sufficient warrantee for the same being the two East Lots of the Square Lying South...the said John Brown for his part agrees to pay the Said Cullum the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars in five equal payments annually...". At the time of this document, the 28-year-old Brown was living in New Richmond, Pa., where he had moved in 1825 and shortly thereafter built a tannery. The lots purchased here were likely used for construction of his family house, which contained a secret room used for hiding fugitive escaped slaves. Three years later, Brown's formerly comfortable life would deteriorate and he would fall into the debt that haunted him until at least 1846. Boldly signed at conclusion. Light, even toning, folds, and light staining on verso, overall very good.
