Description:

JOHN BARTH
(b. 1930) American novelist of existential and post-modern works, notably Chimera, Giles Goat-Boy and The End of the Road. An interesting archive of material consisting of four letters addressed to noted English professor William Plumley, two T.Ms.S., four S.P.s and a number of original snapshots. The letters to Plumley range from 1981-1993, and refer to appearances and lectures, in part: "[Nov. 10, 1981] Your idea sounds like a good one. But my one effort in the graphics line shot my bolt...[June 17, 1993] Pursuant to our telephone call...I'll be pleased to take part in the University's Young Writer's Day festivities...[Dec. 14, 1993] All looks quite agreeable...I'll no doubt be reading from the new book Chatting About Writing and taking questions from the audience. Little Brown tells me that the shipping date for Once Upon a Time is April 7....For the afternoon session, I'll simply chat with the young writers...". In an A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Apr. 17, 1994, Barth pens on a sheet of letterhead from Marrakesh: "...An echo of Paul Bowles country, written...in the Charleston Airport as we get ready to board. Much thanks for your inviting us...". Along with two T.Ms.S. 1p. 4to each [n.d.], an excerpt from Letters, in part: "...Gentles all: Letters is now begun, its correspondents introduced and their stories commencing to entwine. Let those films whose credits appear after the action is started, it will now pause...". Signed at bottom in brown ink. With an I.S.P. 10" x 8" b/w, showing the author in a casual pose and inscribed to Plumley at bottom, and two identical S.P.s. Along with over a dozen 3" x 5" snapshots and eight negatives, showing the author with friends. Very good.
