JOHN B. GRAYSON
1806 - 1861) Career U.S. Army officer and Confederate brigadier general, a Mexican War veteran who because of his long service and military skills, was quickly appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. Very rare Mexican-American War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Mexico City, Sep. 27, 1847, on captured Mexican ‘Ministry of State and the War and Navy Office' letterhead, to U.S. Army Commissary General George Gibson. Writing very soon after the capture of Mexico City by U.S. forces, in part: ‘...I had this pleasure on the 1st instant enclosing you my monthly summary statement for August, since which time we have changed places with the Mexican Army & authorities, as the head of this sheet will indicate. Tomorrow the English courier leaves here for Vera Cruz, & I avail myself of this opportunity of advising you, of the position of our department in these quarters, though with very little hopes of its ever reaching you…' He goes on to discuss the rising price of rations, and promises to send his quarterly reports on the next train to the coast. Grayson signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank of captain below. Shows original mailing folds and ink bleed-through, with some loss of paper to the integral cover, else very good.
