Description:

JOHN B. CLARK
(1802-1885) Confederate senator, congressman and brigadier general of the Missouri State Guard, one the state's leading advocates for secession. Fine content, war-date A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Richmond, Feb. 14, 1863, to his sister, Susan Penn. In small part: ‘...I have not been able to see my dear wife since I last wrote you- it has now been almost two years since I see her… She is now I understand washing at a hotel without even a bed of her own – every thing having been taken from her and she actually ejected from her mansion by our federal vandal enemy – her fate is truly a hard one… During last fall I went out west as far as… Fort Smith in the western part of Arkansas where I found in our army about twelve thousand Missourians who had volunteered and come out. My two sons John [B. Clark, Jr., himself later a brigadier general] and Bennett early last summer obtained from the Secretary of War commissions to return to Missouri and recruit more men for the service… they both resigned [their earlier commissions] and went into Missouri and brought out to Arkansas a thousand men raised near Fayette and Brownville they got out about the middle of November leaving the Missouri River about the first of that month – they suffered greatly having to hide in the day and travel at night… they were attacked frequently but fought their way through with the loss of fifty two men. I saw them paraded – the whole Regt. Were made up of our noble young men raised in Howard Cooper and Boone Counties… My opinion is that our prospects are brighter now than ever before since the war commenced. If we can hold our own for two months more I believe we will have a proposition for peace…' Clark signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows expected folds, with some soiling to the final page, otherwise in very good condition overall.
