JOHN AVERY
(1739 - 1806) First Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Important manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Council Chamber, Boston, June 28, 1786 to SAMUEL HOLTEN, statesman who represented Massachusetts as a delegate to the Continental Congress. Avery advises Holten that he has been elected by the General Court to represent Massachusetts: "...to serve as Delegate from this Commonwealth in the United States in Congress assembled for one year to commence on the first Monday of November next...". Boldly signed, matted and framed. The 1787 session of the Continental Congress which Holten attended would convene in Philadelphia on May 25 and would adjourn on Sep. 17 after completing the writing of the Constitution of the United States.
