Description:

JOHN ADAMS
(1735 - 1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. He later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. Rare D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, May 14, 1798, a scalloped-top ship's passport issued to 'the ship Pacific of Norwich', captained by Solomon Ingraham, 135 tons and armed with two guns, bearing a crew of twelve men. Co-signed by TIMOTHY PICKERING (1745-1829) as Secretary of State. Usual folds, with a stain appearing in the text at the junction of two folds and not too offensive. Adams' signature is quite strong, Pickering's even more so. Overall very good. Matted atop brown cloth, set into a 21 x 37 in. fine quality wood frame.
