(JOHN ADAMS) (3)
JOHN ADAMS (1735-1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. Three period fair copies on laid paper of letters written by Adams to various correspondents, their purpose unclear. Includes: a 1p. July 24, 1775 letter to his wife Abigail: '...The business I have had upon my mind has been as great and important as can be intrusted to man, and the difficulty and intricacy of it is prodigious as when fifty or sixty men have a constitution to form for a great Empire, at the same time that they have a Country of fifteen hundred miles to fortify; millions to arm and train; a Naval Power to begin, an extensive Commerce to regulate; numerous Tribes of Indians to Negotiate with...I must see you ere long...'; a 1p. Sep. 11, 1791 letter from Braintree to the U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Spain concerning the ship Margaret: ‘The uniform goodness & civility which I have experienced from the late Spanish Minister, Mr. Gardouque, and from yourself, have emboldened me to trouble you with this letter' and asking that he intercede in a matter concerning a ship's captain; and a 1791 letter to Col. James Warren discussing how: ‘…we are between Hawk and Buzzard, we ought to have had it in our hands a month ago, the whole legislative, executive, and judicial power of the whole continent, and to have completely modell'd a constitution…' Much more excellent content! Some uneven toning in places, overall near fine.
