Description:

JOHN A. SUTTER
(1803 - 1880) American pioneer and founder of Sacramento upon whose land gold was discovered on January 24, 1848, setting-off the California Gold Rush. Ironically, he died almost bankrupt! Fine content A.L.S., "J.A. Sutter", 1p. oblong 12mo., "Hock Farm" [Sacramento], Mar. 1, 1865, a business letter to P.C. Slattery of Marysville, owner of the Slattery Meat Company. In full: Dear Sir! Please send me only 6 # of Beef, as the bearer cannot take more on horseback. I shall probably be in town on Saturday next, and then we will settle our account. I am very respectfully Yours...". Sutter's Hock Farm, settled in 1841, was the very first piece of land owned by a Westerner in what is now Sutter County, and one of the first properties settled in California. When Sutter wrote Slattery this note on March 1, he could not have known the Gold Rush would cause the ruin of his farm: the settler could find few farmhands, and a fire destroyed the mansion a short while later. This fire burned all of Sutter's personal papers and records, making this document one of the few available from that period. Light toning and vertical folds with a superb, bold signature, overall very good.
