JOHN A. DAHLGREN
(1809 - 1870) Union rear admiral and inventor of the cannon which bore his name. He also commanded the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Scarce war-date manuscript D.S. 1p. 4to., Port Royal Harbor, S.C., Oct. 5, 1864, writing aboard his Flag Steamer Philadelphia, that "Acting Ensign Walter Sargent USN" is "hereby detached from the U. S. S. 'Harvest Moon' and will proceed by the first conveyance to Ossabaw [Sound, Ga.] and report on your arrival to the Senior Officer present for duty on board the U.S.S. 'Winona' Lit. Com'dr W. H. Dana Commanding". Signed at bottom "J. Dahlgren". Walter Sargent would serve in the Navy throughout the War, attaining the rank of Acting Master in May 1865. Spindle holes at left margin, a small dampstained area at top margin affecting nothing, very good condition.
