JOHN A. CAMPBELL
(1811-1889) American jurist and Confederate politician, assistant Secretary of War under Jefferson Davis. Scarce war-date A.E.S. 1p. tall 8vo., [Richmond], Jan. 29, 1864, penned at the bottom of a 8" x 4" postal cover bearing an A.N.S. of a Confederate clerk requesting passes for "Danl. Frayer and Arch. Drysdale". In his capacity as Assistant Secretary of War Campbell instructs John H. Winder, commandant of Andersonville and other notorious Confederate prison camps, in full: "Danl. Frayer and Archd. Drysdale Jan 29th /64: Application of the first to go North to meet his wife (from England) and the latter to return to England - Both Br. Subjects - and have been engaged at Govt. Lithographic works - they were brought over by C. S. agent. 3 enclosures[not present]". Campbell responds, in full: "Br. Gen. Winder Allow passports - place the parties under pledges to make no revelations prejudicial to the Confederate States, by order J. A. Campbell ASW 29 Jany". Very good.
