Description:

JOHANNNES BRAHMS
(1833 - 1897) German composer and pianist, a prime exponent of the Romantic school of composition who created symphonies, piano works, concertos, and his famous 'Lullaby'. A very nice representative Brahms piece, his personal calling card inscribed with an autograph note in German on the verso, [n.p., n.d. but ca. 1872-1897, when Brahms lived at IV. Karlsgasse 4 in Vienna]. The 3.75 in. x 2.2 in. calling card is engraved 'Johannes Brahms/IV. Karlsgasse 4' on the recto, and the verso features Brahms's German inscription: 'I thank you very much. However, I cannot accept your friendly offer. Respectfully yours.' A small piece of adhesive is found along the top edge on recto, else fine. Provenance: ex-Doris Harris, 1970. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified and graded NM-MT 8. Brahms lived for most of his adult life on Karlsgasse in Vienna, just a few steps away from a large park, Resselpark. 4 Karlsgasse was his home as well as his musical studio; it was here that Brahms composed many of his mature works, including his numerous symphonies.
