Description:

(1891 – 1977) German general who commanded the 5th Light Division during the early stages of the North African Campaign. Sacked for his poor performance during the Siege of Tobruk, he later briefly commanded the 16th Motorized Infantry Division during the advance on Moscow. A recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Hamburg, Dec. 18, 1961, in German. Streich relates that he has contacted several people seeking addresses of military men on behalf of his consignor, but without success. He also regrets that most of his photographs were lost during the war but sends a 2 x 3 in. copy (included) showing him with Rommel in North Africa. Also present is a typed document, 4pp. 4to., in German, a chronology of the battle for Tobruk on April 10, 1941 (only), source unknown. Three pieces.
