Description:

(1887 - 1947) German general and commander of the 369th Infantry Division, or 'The Devil's Division', most famous for their brutality against communists and Partisans. Convicted of war crimes by Yugoslavia and later executed by firing squad. Good-content typed D.S. as Regimental Commander, 2pp. 4to., Regimental Command Post, June 25, 1944, awarding the Croatian Iron 3-Leaf Medal IV to Leutnant Wilhelm Eisel. The verso gives a lengthy description of Eisel's ambush attack on a partisan group, writing in part: '...The bandits lost 16 dead, a number of wounded and 6 prisoners. 7 L.M.G., a large number of ammunition, a riding horse, 46 pack animals, and the writing room of the brigade staff were captured...In all other previous assignments, too, he has always distinguished himself as an exemplary leader of hunting teams and also as a company leader...' Neidholt signs on the recto in pencil, adding his approval of the award in the bottom-right. Mild toning throughout, else fine. Sold with a modern scanned image of Neidholdt in uniform, wearing his many decorations.
