Description:

JOEY RAMONE'S ZIPPERED BLACK LEATHER JACKET
JOEY RAMONE (1951-2001) Born Jeffrey Ross Hyman, Joey Ramone is best known as the lead vocalist of the punk rock band the Ramones. His image, voice and tenure as front man of the band made him a countercultural icon. The Ramones were a major influence on the punk rock movement, and they are regularly listed among the top rock bands in history. Joey Ramone died of lymphoma at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on April 15, 2001, after a seven-year battle. We offer an iconic item symbolic of Joey Ramone and the Ramones, namely his well-worn black leather jacket, sold with excellent provenance. The zipper-down jacket, medium size, bears chromed snap-down epaulets, collar ends and lapels, one of which covers part of the right side of the jacket so that when it is worn, much of one's chest would be exposed. There are three zippered pockets in the front, one at mid-chest, and a smaller snap-closed watch pocket is set near the waist. A waist belt is present, fixed only at the front of the jacket, with a metal buckle and grommets. The jacket, unvented, has sleeves which close with 5 1/2" zippers similar to those found elsewhere on the jacket, and the sleeves are pleated where they meet the jacket on the reverse. The jacket's only lining is black nylon with a quilted stitched pattern. This symbolic punk rock piece shows the wear you would expect at the elbows, belt, and lower edges, and the liner is worn at the seat - this is all genuine wear. The finishing touch is Ramone's "Peace" button, which we found in one pocket. The jacket originates from the collection of ROBERT BAIRD JONES (1953-2006). Jones was a celebrity gossip columnist and well-known pop culture groupie, hosting lavish parties at storied nightclubs of the 1970s including Studio 54, Danceteria, The Palladium, and the Limelight. Jones, known to be wildly eccentric, was the privileged son of PEOPLE magazine founder and legendary TIME Magazine editor Cranston Jones. Included is a letter written by Jones in 2006 attesting as to how he came into possession of this item: "...It was given to me by Joey himself in the Fall of 1996 at Webster Hall nightclub in lower Manhattan. I met with Joey to discuss whether he was willing to collaborate with me on an exhibition of painting and drawings that I hoped to show first at Webster Hall, where I have staged numerous exhibitions of celebrity art...Joey decided he was too busy at that time to create an exhibition...He did however offer me something of personal significance for my well known collection of art and objects. Thus I came to possess this leather coat belonging to Joey Ramone...". This jacket matches in cut and design almost every jacket Ramone used on and off stage. A determined collector would undoubtedly find a match with an image of Ramone wearing this same jacket. In our last auction, we sold Andy Warhol's Polaroid camera with the same Robert Baird Jones attribution.
