JOEL BARLOW
(1754-1812) American poet, diplomat and politician, best known for his epic poem "The Columbiad", and for serving as U.S. Minister to France. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Chambery, Jan. 23, 1793, to a "Citizen Hippisley", likely Sir John Coxe Hippisley. Barlow writes, in part:"... General [Francois Christophe de] Kellermann informs me that there will be no difficulty in passing from hence into Piemont, & that he is ready to render you every necessary service. He desires me likewise to let you know that if you remain at Lyons a few days longer you may see him there... You will find no difficulty in the route from Lyons to this place, except from bad roads & indifferent horses. The people are attentive, & particularly to the English..." Barlow signs at the conclusion in black ink. The letter shows original folds, with a tear where the red wax seal has been opened, else very good.
