Description:

JOE LOUIS VS. TOMMY FARR
(1914-1981) 'The Brown Bomber', American heavyweight champion who defended his title 25 times, winning all bouts. A great Louis item, an original b/w broadside, 9 in. x 12 in., advertising for ‘The Surprise Championship Battle' on Aug. 30, 1937, showing Louis ready to spar with with Welsh boxer Tommy Farr ‘Fifteen Rounds – Blow by Blow – Round by Round'. Thomas George ‘Tommy' Farr (1913-1986) dubbed ‘The Tonypandy Terror', rose from obscurity as a bare-knuckle boxer to become one of the greats. In this legendary fight at Yankee Stadium and before a crowd of some 50,000 spectators, the 23-year-old Farr gave Louis a truly tough fight, lasting 15 rounds and injuring the heavyweight champ in the process. Louis won the match through a controversial and fractional 13-2 decision, earning boos from the spectators and the derision of British sportscasters. Expected toning, else very good and ideal for display.
