Description:

JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP
(1893 - 1946) Nazi foreign minister, the first of the Nuremberg defendants to hang on October 16, 1946. VON RIBBENTROP BECOMES A MEMBER OF THE SS Fine content and association A.L.S. 'Ribbentrop' on London hotel letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., London, June 27, 1933 to HEINRICH HIMMLER (1900-1945) Hitler's Chief of the SS and Gestapo. Von Ribbentropp displays his disdain for Himmler while accepting an honorary position in the SS. In part: 'My dear Herr Himmler, From Berlin I received the order from the Reichsfuhrung-SS accepting me with the rank of Standartenfuhrer. I was very happy to receive your acceptance into this fantastic formation which you created to which Germany owes so much, and I will always proudly wear its black honorary cloth. The beginning of next week I will be back in Berlin, and I hope that we see each other soon so that the freshly-made standartenfuhrer can present himself and his new honor...' This letter, by German standards rather disrespectful ('Herr Himmler') and dripping with sarcasm, is initialed by HEINRICH HIMMLER at top. File holes at left margin, else very good. 'Himmler's contempt for Ribbentrop's efficiency was...tempered by some sympathy in regard to his position [regarding class consciousness].' 'The SS'. Gerard Reitlinger. p. 114. Sold with a 6 x 8 in. press photo of von Ribbentrop en route to Buckingham Palace to present his diplomatic credentials.
