"Jimmy" as President-elect, 1p. 4to. on his personal letterhead, [Washington], Jan. 6, 1977 to Congressman Delwin M. Clawson of California writing on his then proposed pardon of Vietnam draft evaders. He writes, full: "I appreciate your comments asking me to reconsider my decision to issue a pardon for Vietnam draft evaders, and am sorry we disagree on this matter. Thank you for letting me know of your views." Carter issued his pardon to those who had fled the country to avoid the draft during the Vietnam war on January 21, 1977, one day after his inauguration. Offered with the original transmittal envelope. Light horizontal folds, else very fine condition.
