Description:

JIMI HENDRIX'S 1969 FENDER STRATOCASTER GUITAR
We are thrilled to be able to offer an instrument for which Jimi Hendrix will forever be identified; one of his Fender Stratocaster guitars! This 1969 Fender Stratocaster guitar (serial #240186), originally owned by Jimi Hendrix, was given as a gift to his longtime friend and fellow musician Larry Lee in 1969. Larry Lee met Jimi in 1962 in Nashville, Tennessee. They played in several bands together, including The Bonnevilles, The King Kasuals, and as Curtis Mayfield's backing band. In this portion of a notarized statement from 2006, Lee states: "...In July of 1969 I got a call from Jimi to join a new band he was starting called 'Gypsy Sun and Rainbows.' I moved to New York in July of 1969...I was in the New York area from July to October 1969. During this time, Jimi gave me many gifts, including some of his personal clothes, (I wore his clothes at the famous Woodstock performance) a Marshall guitar amplifier, some guitar pedals, guitar straps, and the above-mentioned black Fender Stratocaster. This guitar first showed up at the 'Shokan House' in Woodstock in the summer of 1969, we were living with Jimi and preparing to record and rehearse for the Woodstock concert...I remember Jimi rehearsing with this guitar at the Woodstock rehearsals. Jimi gave me this guitar at the Navarro Hotel at Central Park South...It was sort of a farewell present, as this same day he told me he was breaking up the band due to pressures from management. This was in the fall of 1969. I played it a little and packed it away at my mother's house for many years...

". Larry Lee's tenure with the short-lived with "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows" and included recording sessions at the Record Plant and Hit Factory in New York, but ended in September after two gigs in New York; a benefit in Harlem and at the Salvation Club in Greenwich Village.
A detailed condition report from Rod's Guitars in Memphis in 2001 confirms that the guitar and case are 100% original with no replaced parts. The report notes that "the nut has been reversed for a left-handed player as well as the strap button has been moved to the opposite side to accommodate a left-handed player. The neck pocket has had some of the factory over-spray removed...It appears that these slight modifications were done decades ago.
Also included is one of the guitar straps noted in the affidavit, as well as a monogrammed face towel from the Navarro Hotel. Besides Larry Lee's affidavit and condition report, a collection of rare and unpublished photos are included.
