Description:

"JEWS NOT ALLOWED"
A most iconic item, a wrought iron signed decorated with flowers and declaring in ornate lettering: "Juden nicht erwünscht" ("Jews not allowed"). The sturdily-built sign measures 30" x 22 1/2" and bears cross braces fitted into a frame made of welded double bars of steel. The outside of the frame is decorated with ten 3 1/2" magnolia blossoms, horrifically offset with four 4" swastikas. The metal letters, over 1/16" thick, have been riveted to the cross braces, while the other attachments are riveted to the external frame. The entire piece bears many year's accumulation of paint, rust, and residue, with some distortion to the swastikas, yet the sign remains entirely intact and solid. This item was discovered by our consignor in a small town in Germany. He advises that one road led through the village, and one of these signs appeared at each end of the town. The signs were discovered in a corner of the village works yard where they had been dumped many decades ago. This item is, regrettably, as genuine as it gets, and is still as disturbing as it was 70 years ago. It was sold by us several years ago to our present consignor, and was hammered-down at $13,000.
