Description:

Scarce pair of items in Dutch, produced for Jewish audiences in German-occupied Amsterdam, includes: printed broadside, 1p, 4to., April 11, 1941, announcing the establishment of the newspaper "Het Joodsche Weekblad" ("The Jewish Weekly"), "With permission from the German authorities... as an edition of the Jewish Council of Amsterdam..." The announcement is signed in type at the conclusion by Abraham Asscher and Prof. David Cohen, publishers of the paper and heads of the Jewish Council. WITH: The Dec. 4, 1942 edition of "The Jewish Weekly", 12pp. folio, primarily presenting advertisements for various aid available to Amsterdam Jews, courses in various skills, columns on Hanukkah and related traditions, with a few very slim items of highly sanitized news. The paper shows slight toning and chips to the edges, else both very good. Abraham Asscher and David Cohen co-founded the "Committee for Special Jewish Affairs" in 1933, as Jews from Germany and elsewhere in Europe began to seek asylum in the Netherlands. this organization aimed to provide aid to the refugees and assist them in emigrating from continental Europe, but was dissolved after the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany in 1940. Asscher and Cohen were in turn ordered to head the Jewish Council of Amsterdam, in order to mediate the occupation government’s orders to the Dutch Jewish community and, beginning in July 1942, to help organize the selection of Jewish deportees from the Netherlands to the work camps. Both men were deported in 1943, along with the remaining members of the council, with both becoming the only members of the council to survive the concentration camps.
