Description:

Very rare "J"-marked badge issued to a German Jew, probably forced labor, engaged in factory work in Germany during World War II. The cast aluminum badge measures 1.5 in. across, 1.75 in. top to bottom, and bears a yellow engraved "J" at center with a yellow border about the badge. The badge also has the number "2042" at top and factory logo "GWF" in relief at bottom. The reverse of the pin has been painted silver, and the fastening pin is of period manufacture. What may be a museum number was added to the reverse. We suspect the the "GWF" represents aircraft manufacturers "Gothaer Waggonfabrik". Gotha's main contribution to the Luftwaffe was the Gotha Go 145 trainer. The firm also produced the Gotha Go 242 assault glider and licence-built Messerschmitt Bf 110. Such badges were required in order to enter and leave the factory premises to protect against spies and to monitor the staff as a whole. This piece is likely from 1941 to 1943, before the "Factory Action" sent Jewish workers to the camps. From a 30+ year German collection.
