Description:

JEROME D. SALINGER
(1919-2009) American author who established his reputation on the basis of a single novel, The Catcher in the Rye (1951), whose principal character, Holden Caulfield, epitomized the growing pains of a generation of high school and college students. Very rare T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Cornish, N.H., Mar. 26, 1976, in which the famously reclusive author writes to Linda Barrett in Glen, N.H.. In part: "...Thank you for your complimentary and cordial letter. I'm sorry to pass the bleak word along to you, but there are no legitimate hints or tips about writing professionally. None, surely, that I know of. Best thing you can do, I believe, is to read omnivorously, and write constantly...it's quite possible that something may come of it...". Signed with initials "JDS", with original envelope bearing, predictably, no return address. Fine condition.
