Description:

JEREMY FRANCIS GILMER
(1818 - 1883) American soldier, mapmaker, and civil engineer most noted for his service as the Chief Engineer of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He was crucial in fortifying the defenses of Charleston, Atlanta and Mobile. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Savannah, Georgia, Jan. 7, 1854. In part: ‘...I inferred that you wished to inquire if I would appoint a competent ship carpenter to be present for the inspecting of all the timber and other materials as they are used in the construction...I hope you will not permit anything to delay the work...For your own safety you should undoubtedly have an experienced ship carpenter present, constantly at the yard while the hull is being built...Owing to my many duties here and at Charleston it will be impossible for me to be in New York while the dredge is building: and I shall request someone else say Major Fraser, as he is in the city pretty constantly – to give the necessary supervision...'. Insect damage to the left edge, else very good.
