JEREMY FRANCIS GILMER
(1818 - 1883) American soldier, mapmaker, and civil engineer most noted for his service as the Chief Engineer of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He was crucial in fortifying the defenses of Charleston, Atlanta and Mobile. Lot of two signed items from Gilmer, including: war-date A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., Richmond, July 25, 1864, a ‘Confederate States of America Military Telegraph' to General Pierre G.T. Beauregard, in part: ‘...The assignment of officers to your engineer companies will be made as soon as practicable...'. Signed at the conclusion, adding rank. An exceptionally fragile document, tears repaired on verso with archival tape. WITH: a manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Richmond, Dec. 21, 1864, a ‘The Southern Telegraph Companies' telegraph, again sent to General Pierre G. T. Beauregard, in part: ‘...Will you call Maj. Genl. Smith your Chief Engr. to the immediate supervision of the repairs on the Geo. Railroads...'. Signed at the conclusion, adding rank. Light chipping, else very good. Two pieces.
