and commissary for Rochambeau's army. War-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Hartford, Feb. 23, 1778 to Gov. George Clinton in Poughkeepsie updating him on a wine purchase: "...I promised you a quart cask Lisbon wine but found it so indifferent I did not think it would answer your purpose [and] have therefore sent you one quarter cask of Madeira which when fined [sic] will be good. If you can afford it time to fine itself it will be best, if not put a pint of new milk into it and shake it well -- after which let it stand in a place when there is no floor to shake it, a few days will make fine eno[ough] to drink. I charge You for it what it Cost me twelve months past One hundred Dollars which is much less than it can be bought at now...". With integral address leaf with intact red wax seal. Small loss from seal tear, otherwise in fine condition.
