Description:

JEREMIAH T. BOYLE
(1818 - 1871) Union brigadier general, joined Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio and participated in the Battle of Shiloh. In May 1862, he was appointed Military Governor of Kentucky by Lincoln, and at times served in command of both the District of Kentucky and District of Western Kentucky. Boyle dispatched troops several times to combat incursions and cavalry raids by John Hunt Morgan. Rare, fine association war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Lebanon, Nov. 4, 1861 to Gen. William T. Sherman. In part: '...I was surprised a few months ago by Genl. Ward saying to me that he had been ordered to turn over his command to me...I have no commission from the President as Brigadier General. I stated this to you before. The President authorized me to raise a Brigade consisting of three Regiments and gave me the authority to names the field officers, whom he would commission...any command I hear I shall rely on my practical common sense rather than any assumed military knowledge. I am certainly anxious to get a Kentucky army in the field...I am ready to do it to the best of my ability...I have not a doubt I can fill the duties of a Brig. General as well as many in the field...I address this letter to you in confidence...' Folds, else very good.
