Description:

JENNINGS FIELD, BIRTHPLACE OF LOUISIANA''S OIL INDUSTRY
Rare pair of mounted albumen photos, each 8" x 6" (12" x 10" with mount), both depicting scenes from the Jennings oilfield, the site of the first oil well in Louisiana, discovered in 1901. These images are close contemporaries; the first depicts a group of three men, two with rifles and one holding the bridle of a horse, in front of a wooden shack. The verso of the mount bears the ink inscription: "J.A. Libby Steve Carteris [?] George Little, Deck and Shack, Jennings Oil Field, Hattie W. Libby". The second image shows a group of sixteen oil field workers, a mule team and two hounds in front of what appears to be the same shack as shown in the previous photo, with two men holding rifles and three with recently-shot possums. The verso bears the inscription: "C.H. Leopold, mule team and men in Crowley Oil & Mineral Co. lease, taken in front of Libby''s shack after a possum hunt." In modern times, Louisiana is ranked as the second leading producer of natural gas and the eighth in petroleum in the United States, with much of this exploitation still being undertaken at the Jennings oilfield by the Crowley Oil & Mineral Co. The mounts of both photos show large chips, with some minor spotting and fading to the images themselves, else very good. A great piece of American natural resources history.
