JEFFREY AMHERST
(1717 - 1797) British major general who captured Louisbourg from the French in 1758. Served as Governor General of British North America but left the office due to Pontiac's Rebellion and later served as colonial Governor of Virginia. Manuscript L.S., 1p. small folio, New York, July 13, 1763, to THOMAS HANCOCK (1703 –1764), merchant and politician uncle of John Hancock who rose from obscurity to become one of the wealthiest businessmen in colonial Massachusetts, accumulating a 70,000 Pound fortune over the course of his lifetime. In part: ‘…This will be Delivered to you by Capt. Watson of Gorham's Corps, who has the care of a Sergeant & three men of the Royal [guard], that came hither on a particular service, and are now returning to Halifax, with two deserters: Capt. Watson is to put the whole under care of Lieut. Dixon of Gorham's, who is now in Boston, and will proceed with them to Halifax…you will procure them a passage by the very first Opportunity...charge the same in your Accompts with the Crown...'. Two losses at left margin costing a few letter of text, clumsily repaired on verso. damage to the right side of the page, lightly stained, otherwise very good.
