Description:

from the French in 1758. Served as Governor General of British North America but left the office due to Pointiac's Rebellion and later served as colonial governor of Virginia. Historically important manuscript D.S. "Amherst" 1p. folio, [London], Nov. 1, 1776, a document in which Amherst approves the issue of arms to the first Hessian troops sent to America. In part: "...Mr. Richard Veale Storekeeper at Ports[mouth] justified in having issued out of His Majesty's stores at that place the Ammunition undermentioned being for service of the First Division of Hessian Troops; commanded Lieut. General Heister, By Order of the Board 11th October 1776...". The ammunition is listed as "...Fill'd Musqt. Ball Cartridges...Flints for Musquets...etc.". Heister (1707-1777) commanded the first contingent of Hessians sent to America in May 1776, and served at Long Island, White Plains and Trenton. Boldly signed, minor tiny chips to right margin, very good.
