Description:

JEFFERSON DAVIS
(1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. Extraordinary manuscript D.S. as president of the C.S.A., 1p. 4to., Richmond, June 13, 1864, 'To the Senate of the Confederate States', in full: 'Agreeably to the recommendation of the Secretary of War, I nominate the officers on the accompanying list, to the rank affixed to their names respectively.' Boldly signed 'Jefferson Davis' at conclusion. Attached to Davis' letter with a ribbon is a L.S. signed by JAMES A. SEDDON (1815-1880), a former U.S. congressman from Virginia who served as Confederate Secretary of War until just before the end of the Civil War. Seddon's letter is also dated in Richmond on June 13, 1864. In it, he recommends CHARLES F. HOPKINS (1825-1897) be promoted to Colonel, 10th Fl. Regt., THEODORE W. BREVARD (1835-1892) to Colonel of the 11th Fl. Regt., W. W. Scott and J. F. McClelland to Lt. Colonel of the 10th and 11th Fla. Regts., respectively, and John Westcott and John Gee to Major of the same regiments. A few short fold splits to Seddon's letter, else very good. Brevard would be appointed to the rank of brigadier general and was later captured by forces under He later died in 1882. This is the first such Davis congressional document we have seen in 40 years in the trade!
