A scarce edition one of Davis' final address to the Senate before he left the chamber at the start of the Civil War: Speech of the Hon. Jefferson Davis, Of Mississippi Delivered in the United States Senate, On the 10th day of January, 1861 upon the Message of the President of the United States, on the Condition of Things in South Carolina. (Baltimore: Printed by John Murphy & Co., 1861) 16pp. 8vo., (325 mm.), in titled paper wraps. A day after his own state of Mississippi had voted for secession (he had yet to receive official word), Davis makes one final address before the Senate before he left Washington. He wrote, in small part "...Senators, we are rapidly drifting into a position in which this is to become a Government of the Army and Navy in which the authority of the United States is to be maintained, not by law, not by constitutional agreement between the States, but by physical force; and you will stand still and see this policy consummated?... " A scarce edition (OCLC# 6037570). Horizontal creases, moderate damp stains at margins, first and last pages separated, else very good condition.
