Description:

JEAN-SYLVAIN BAILLY
(1736-1793) French scientist and renowned astronomer who turned to politics, presiding over the Tennis Court Oath of 1789 and becoming the first mayor of Paris. A latent monarchist, he was guillotined during the Terror. Partly-printed, fine association D.S. ‘J. S. Bailly', 1p. folio, Nantes, May 22, 1793, a ‘Certificate of Residence' for Bailly established by the Municipality of Nantes, signed during his tenure there after fleeing Paris in November, 1791 following the Champs des Mars Massacre, for which he was held responsible. The signatories vouch that Bailly is indeed residing in Nantes under the terms of the law. Signed by Bailly at conclusion, as well as by more than 30 other individuals, including: PIERRE CLAVIER (1748-1812), French politician and Imperial Director of the Court Angers. Most worthy of further research! Red wax seal at bottom left and another on verso, expected folds and light soiling at edges, very good.
