Description:

JEAN-PIERRE-FRANCOIS BONET
(1768-1857) French Revolutionary War general, saw action during the Peninsular War, and wounded in action at the Battle of Salamanca, then commanded at the Battle of Dresden, after which he was taken prisoner. Interesting A.L.S. 'Bonet' 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], '8 Ventose an 6' [Feb. 26, 1798], to M. Champin, President of the Department at Coblentz. On Feb. 16, 1798, Bonet was tried for having incurred too many expenses during a campaign while serving under Oliver. Here, he appeals his case: ‘…Public opinion has given its judgment, and if yours does not refuse me theirs, I will know if they agree and if this judgment is favorable to me…I await the event with constancy and serenity…don't reproach me for anything…'. Indeed, Bonet would be acquitted at the military tribunal, which would meet in Wiesbaden, Mar. 15, 1798. Near fine condition.
