Description:

JEAN-JOSEPH DUSAULX
(1728-1799) French writer and statesman during the Revolution, a friend of disgraced Mayor of Paris Jean Sylvain Bailly. He was also a member of the Convention and Committee of the Bastille. Fine content A.L.S. ‘Desaulx' 3pp. 4to., Paris, Feb. 3, 1792, to mayor Jerome Petion, in part: ‘…The brave man who will present this letter to you was one of the first to be riddled with shots at the Siege of the Bastille, whence he was carried away unconscious under the care of M. Santerre, commander of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. The rumor of his death caused him to have none of the rewards awarded to the conquerors of the Bastille…I am making a petition, in his name…Meanwhile, the unfortunate town of Valois is dying of hunger, and, covered with wounds that are still bleeding, does not know where to lay its head. I therefore believe…that is as much of your justice and your humanity to provide it without delay, with the temporary relief it needs. All the facts about this good Citizen…are now with the committee of petitions…Add, Mr. Mayor, that soon all the sections of Paris have knowledge of the things that I have the honor to forward to you...I repeat, Laurent of the city of Valois was one of the first victims of the revolution…'. The Storming of the Bastille famously occurred on July 14, 1789, with the ‘vainquers' numbering anywhere from 650-1000. Approximately 100 people were wounded or died in the attack. In fine condition and worthy of further research. Petion (1756-1794) became the second mayor of Paris after the dismissal of Jean-Sylvain Bailly. In 1793, he aligned himself with the moderate Girodins, becoming a bitter foe of Robespierre and was forced out of the Convention.
