In part: '...I am informed by Laurent Clerc who I suppose you are acquainted with that you are the inventor of a new bayonet for which you obtained a patent from the U.S. government...I shall be in New York at the end of this month, if you be pleased to forward the bayonet to the French consul in that place, as I am shortly to sail for France. I will take it with me and promise you to recommend it to the attention of my government. If it is considered in France a useful discovery you may be sure of the reward your merit deserves...' Laurent Clerc (1785-1869) was a French teacher called 'The Apostle of the Deaf in America' and is regarded as the most famous deaf person in American history and founded the first school for the deaf in North America.
