(1725-1807) French Marshall who commanded French forces sent to aid the Americans in the Revolutionary War. With Washington, he was essential in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A.L.S., 4pp. large 8vo., Vendome, Feb. 28, 1751, in French in which Rochambeau defends a nobleman who had accidently killed another man while hunting. In part: ‘...My Lord, I think it is my honorable duty to inform you of a situation which although of minor importance originally has grown serious in its circumstances especially with regard to what happened in front of me...The elder Lord of Brossart de la Griseliere had the misfortune of killing a man in a hunting accident three years ago...as the gentleman is poor and not in a position to benefit from a grace from the sea, we let him enjoy the privilege known as the Lazarus which was created by Louis of Bourbon Count of Vendome...’. Boldly penned and signed; lengthy with good content. Slight edge toning, else fine condition.
