Description:

JEAN-BAPTISTE DE ROCHAMBEAU
(1725 - 1807) French Marshall who commanded French forces sent to aid the Americans in the Revolutionary War. With Washington, he was essential in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Valenciennes, Aug. 18, 1791, as Commander of the North to M. de la Graviere, in French. The general defends France's interests in a frontier incident from the early days of the French Revolution, in part: "...I have the honor to send...the judicial report made by the Commissioner of War concerning the rifle shots fired by the Dragoon on duty wounding a wagon driver who refused to stop even after being ordered to do so repeatedly. This happened on French territory. The best thing about all this is that the man is doing very well after having been treated by the Regiment's Chief Surgeon at the Regiment's Expense. I have just given the order to recall the detachment of Dragoons. The only reason they were sent to Crépin was to reinforce the cordon that exists there to prevent the exporting of grains. I will reduce this cordon as soon as possible, but nevertheless in such a manner as to assure that the laws of the State are strictly observed in our frontier...". Crépin, today in Belgium, was part of the Netherlands in 1791. Fine condition.
