4. JOHN JAY (1745 - 1829) American jurist and statesman, member of the Continental Congress who also helped Franklin negotiate peace with Great Britain, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Good content A.L.S. "John Jay" as Governor of New York, 1p. 4to., Albany, March 28, 1800, likely penned to the members of the New York State legislature. In part: "...You will perceive by a letter from the Vice President of the United States, which I herewith lay upon you, that the honorable James Watson, Esq., one of the Senators from this state in the Senate of the United States has resigned his seat in that House...". Folds, very good. Watson served in the Senate from Aug. 17, 1798 to Mar. 19, 1800, when he resigned to accept an appointment by President John Adams to serve as a naval officer in New York City. $800-1,200
