JAY GOULD
(1836 - 1892) American financier and "robber baron" who manipulated railway stock prices, looted the Erie Rail Road's treasury, and brought on the panic of "Black Friday". A pair of stock certificates for shares in the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway Co., one for ten shares dated Aug. 29, 1887, signed by Gould at lower right. The other (unsigned), grants the owner one hundred shares, and is dated Feb. 24, 1880. One punch hole through Gould's signature, lightly affecting it, otherwise the usual punch cancels throughout, with ordinary wear and tear. Two pieces.
